Go Ape Social (16/08/2009)

The day started with us meeting at the University for a 'light' training session, which left most of us in a sweat. When everybody had arrived and after realising that nobody had actually printed off a map, we aimlessly set off in the general direction of Dorset. After an uneventful crawl to Dorset through the traffic jams we eventually turned off into the lush green forest that is Moors Valley country park. We had arrived in plenty of time, so we parked up and had a bit of a wander round, grabbed a bite to eat and went through some kata's for the upcomming grading while we waited for our alloted time slot. 2.00pm came around and it wasn't long before we were attaching harness straps to places that were altogether a little too close for comfort, we had a quick briefing and then were let loose in the tree tops. Go Ape consists of 5 sections, each starts with a rope ladder up into the trees and ends with a zip line back down to the ground. In between there are all manner of ways to cross from tree to tree, including balance wires, tarzan swings, rope bridges, tunnels, cargo nets, etc, etc. Each section gets progressively harder and higher as you go through the course. Apart from the fact that it does take quite a while to get around the course, as you are limited to the speed that the groups in front of you move at, it was a great day.. The highlight of the day for me was Jed setting off down a zipline only to reaslise he'd got one of his safety ropes tangled around the pulley; this finished up with one of the staff members having to winch himself up the zipline from the bottom, grab Jed and pull him down to the bottom. Of course the only sensible thing for us to do was capture the whole thing on video and mercilessly rip it out of him when he eventually made it to the ground, after all - that's what friends are for :D When we had all descended the final zip line and removed our harnesses, we were presented with certificates , and after a brief discussion on how many pizzas to buy we set off. The night finished with a bit of a party round at Jess's place before the remaining hard core made it to a club. All in all a thoroughly good time was had by all, and we're planning the next installment on the social calendar already.
